ESL Leads to Fame for Gifted Musicians

The enormity of the list of superstar musical talent that has learned English as a second language may be surprising, but with musicians from all over the world looking to make it big on the world’s biggest stage, it really does make sense. Who, then, are some of the most famous ESL musicians of our time? Take a look at this list of ultra-talented individuals:

Perhaps one of the most famous singers to learn English is Shakira. The Colombian-born megastar is unique in that she even writes and composes the songs that she sings in her non-native language. She also inspires through her crossover into entertainment, working as a judge on the popular American singing competition, The Voice, where she actually critiqued prospective American entertainers to the delight of the audience.

Another great example among ESL musicians that achieved worldwide popularity is Ricky Martin. The Puerto Rican entertainer, made famous by the 90s hit “Livin’ La Vida Loca”, has had a string of musical successes all over the world. The two-time Grammy award winner, who most recently won this year, has been successfully making music as a crossover artist for 25 years.

Jumping to the other side of the world, there are a variety of European acts that have used their mastery of English to rock both the American and worldwide record charts. M2M, Ace of Base, The Cardigans, and ABBA have all tasted success in the United States as ESL musicians. Songs like “Don’t Say You Love Me”, “The Sign”, “Lovefool”, and “Dancing Queen”, among others, have rocked America and showed great handling of the English Language.
