A TOEFL Preparation Checklist

Taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or the TOEFL test, is an important step toward studying abroad in the United States or other countries that speak English. Studying and making the right preparations can help you get the best score so that you can improve your chances of studying at the university of your choice.

Here is a simple TOEFL preparation list that will help you understand what to expect when the big day arrives:

* Show up at least 30 minutes before the test is scheduled to begin. This will give you time to get signed in and take care of any other important business details.

* Have valid identification that includes your name, photo and signature. A driver’s license or passport are the best options.

* Bring your registration confirmation letter. This will include the registration number and the codes for the schools to which you want your scores sent.

* If you are taking a paper-based test, bring at least three or four pencils. You may not use mechanical pencils.

* Prepare to have your photo taken. An administrator will take your photo when you arrive and will place it on your seat. The same photo will be included with your score card for security purposes.

* Bring earplugs if you think you will need them to help you concentrate.

* Place your personal belongings in one of the lockers provided. You will not be permitted to bring them in the room.

Know that you will not be able to reschedule the test when you arrive and will have to do it ahead of time. You will not be given extra time for the test, so make sure your practice sessions are timed. Your scores will be sent to you online or in the mail, and you can retake the test if you are not happy with your performance.
