There are many things that stop people from studying a second language. They might say they’re too busy and just don’t have the time. Or maybe they think classes are too expensive. Others might question if they’re smart enough. As every student knows, none of these reasons should stop you from starting your journey to learn English. With hard work and dedication, you can overcome any potential obstacle–even age.
Adult students in their 30s, 40s, and beyond sometimes think they’re too old to take up a new language. An inspirational 85-year-old man in Texas is just one example of many that prove that age should not stop you from learning a new language. Pablo Valverde was born in Mexico and moved to the United States as a teen. Due to financial needs in his family, he had to work from a very young age and wasn’t able to attend middle school or high school. He knows how to speak the language, but never learned to write or read in English. Now, he’s changing all that.
Mr. Valverde is enrolled in an ESL course and plans on mastering the language. He chose to attend classes to learn English as an alternative to spending his retirement years watching television. Let’s hope he motivates others to join him in learning a new language no matter what age they are!
