Photo-of-creative-ways-practice-english-ALCCLearnEnglishWhen you start to learn English, it can be fun, exciting and even a little bit scary. By talking in the language as much as possible, you will feel more confident and learn more quickly. However, practicing drills from a textbook or in a classroom can start to feel a little rote. You will need to think outside the box and find some creative ways to practice English so you can keep that feeling of fun and excitement.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Set Up a Language Tandem

If you have a friend who is learning also or who is a native speaker, you can set up a language tandem to practice. Just meet for coffee, dinner or any other activity that you already enjoy doing together, but make it a rule that you will only speak English. You will challenge yourself to learn more vocabulary more quickly, and you will get a sense of what it’s like speaking the language in everyday situations.

  1. Create Social Media Accounts in English

You are likely already on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to keep in touch with friends. Why not create accounts that are solely in English? You can change the settings so that all the text on the sites are in English, and you can make it a rule to only interact with friends and followers in the language. Reach out to native speakers you don’t know to really challenge yourself.

  1. Watch Movies and Read Books in English

Find some of your favorite movies in English and don’t turn on the subtitles. Challenge yourself to listen and understand the dialogue. Read books and magazines in English, as well. If you want to really have fun with it, set up a book club in English also to discuss what you read.

It doesn’t have to be intimidating to learn English. Use these creative ideas to practice English, and you will soon be feeling more confident and speaking like a native.
