3333804889_237682d73bMillions of people come to New York City each year to live and study. As an ESL instructor, I have noticed that one of the most common issues that new students face when they first get to the city is learning how to get around. With so many transportation options, it can be quite overwhelming, especially when you’re just learning English for the first time. Here are a few tips that will help you navigate the city.

Taxis

If you are traveling with a small group of three or four other students who are learning English , taking a taxi is a great way to get around. By splitting the fare, you can save money. Just have an idea of where you are going so that you can tell the driver. Also remember to tip your driver. A standard tip for a taxi driver is about 10-15%.

Subways

If you aren’t in a hurry to get somewhere or have more people in your group than can fit in a taxi, your best bet is to use the subway. Using the subway is a great way to explore different areas of the city, and it can allow you to get places without the fear of having to speak to another person while you are in the early stages of learning English. In order to know where you are once you get off the subway, use the local neighborhood map that is on the wall of the station. If you need assistance, don’t be afraid to ask a booth attendant to help you find your way.

Buses

When you need to make a trip across town, buses are the way to go. Just don’t expect to get there too quickly. There are many bus routes, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the route you need to take beforehand. Routes and schedules are available online at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s website http://new.mta.info/.

In order to learn how to get around the city, take your time and research where you’re going before you leave your home. Taking a map with you can help you get just about anywhere. If you run into any trouble or get lost, simply ask someone by using the map to point where you want to go.
